On a hillside site in a Central Austin neighborhood, we’re designing a new house for three generations. Located adjacent to the much-loved greenbelt, the lot slopes to the west overlooking an undulating tree canopy. Our task is to design a simple, efficient house that takes advantage of the expansive views while rooting itself into the steep terrain. A large wrap-around porch, covered by a cantilevered roof eave, allows uninterrupted western views, while shading the large openings from the direct afternoon sun. Internally, attention is given to balancing the private and communal activities of the different family members, with all bedrooms and living areas enjoying views of the greenbelt.
